Are you a budget-conscious gaming-enthusiast that wishes you could make money while playing on your phone? Believe it or not, the Blast app will actually reward you for gaming and saving money with cash prizes.

Blast, a platform run by a diverse team of gamers, founders, financial professionals, technologists, musicians and designers, wants to help you save and win money by doing what you love.

What is Blast?

Blast is a free-to-download gaming-based savings app that allows gamers to save, earn and win money while playing popular games like Candy Crush and Clash Royale. The company is based in Newport Beach, Calif. and launched its app in July 2018.

Users connect their checking account to Blast with the option to set up one-time and automatic deposits. Blast savings accounts offer a 2% APY, as of September 2018.

Players then make money and gain rank on a leaderboard by completing Missions. They can also elect the option to save 1¢ per minute of gameplay from a personal bank account.

How Does Blast Work?

First, you must download the Blast app, which is available via the Google Play store. If you have an iPhone, you can join the waitlist for the app’s compatibility with iOS devices.

To leverage Blast’s high-yield savings account, you can link up to your bank account and make a deposit with as little as $5. The maximum daily deposit amount is $50, and all deposits, regardless of their type, must not exceed a combined daily maximum transfer amount of $100.

Select Your Mission

  • Within the Blast app, users will choose from a variety of “Missions” and games, from “casual” to “hardcore.”
  • Blast supports nearly every game in the Google Play Store, and plans to support games from the Apple App Store, Steam, and other top PC and console titles.
  • Upon completing Missions, users earn Mission Rewards, which are automatically deposited into the Blast high-yield savings account.
  • “For example, earn 25¢ for connecting candy, make 50¢ for collecting coins, or get $1 for conquering that pesky level 7,” according to the Blast website.

Climb the Leaderboard

Once you have selected your Mission, you can climb the leaderboard by earning eXperience Points (XP) for each dollar that you save. Every week, Blast will award $50 to whoever comes in first place on the leaderboard.

Leaderboard rankings go by your XP points, dependent on how many Missions you have completed and how much savings you have built.

There are two ways to build your total XP.

  • Blast “available” high-yield savings account balance: At the end of each day, gamers are given XP for “available” money in their Blast account. $1 = 10 XP pts.
  • Missions: Some Missions will have XP as a part of their rewards.

Can You Make Money With Blast? Is Blast Legit?

Blast is a free app that says it has no hidden costs or fees. The company boasts that its platform offers an average return five times higher than the national average on savings accounts.

The company says that “security is a top priority,” and that it uses bank-level security with 256-bit encryption to keep gamers’ data locked down and private. Blast accounts are FDIC-insured for balances up to $250,000.

The Blast app has a 3.8/5 star rating on the Google Play store based on nearly 4,000 reviews. While a majority of the ratings are five stars, some negative 1-star reviews complain about the $5 minimum withdrawal amount, account lockouts, annoying ads and bugs in the app. One reviewer complained that new updates make you “do so much for so little… like getting to level 100 for a dollar.”

One blogger reportedly made just over $17 in one week ($12 from missions and $5 from leaderboard rankings) without dedicating hours to the game. He reported playing only when waiting for appointments, on the stair stepper, or lounging on the couch.

It should be noted that deposits can take 1-2 business days for funds to transfer to the Blast savings account. It may take 4-6 business days for funds to transfer from Blast to a linked checking account or PayPal account. There is a 30¢ PayPal Transaction Fee per transaction.

Is Blast Available for Everyone?

You must have at least $5 to make a deposit or a withdrawal on the Blast app.

Currently, the Blast platform requires an Android 5.0 or higher.

Is Blast Worth Your Time?

While playing games on Blast won’t win you a lot of money, it could be a great call for those who are already playing games and don’t mind the app running in the background. Its high yield savings account, as well as the incentive to play new games for small winnings, may also make it an attractive option.

That said, if you aren’t a big gamer and you’re simply looking for functionality like recurring deposits and high-yield savings accounts, established fintech platforms like Acorns and Wealthfront are probably a better bet.
