As summer ends and fall begins, there are tons of opportunities to purchase necessary items at much lower prices than during the height of summer. If you’ve needed a few new, big-ticket items, now might be the time to dig out your wallet. Take a look at our list of the best things to buy in September so you can save a bundle this month!

1. Grocery Store Produce and Supplies

Food items to grill in September, such as meats and vegetables, are typically on sale.

September is also a great time to stock up on school or office supplies. All back-to-school items go on clearance since the new school year has already begun. So you should definitely stock up for next year or rough it for the first week if you’re feeling extra frugal.

It’s easy to forget that local food in season is always cheaper than produce that isn’t in season or has to be shipped across the country. Sweet potatoes, beets, apples, pumpkin, cranberries, squashes, pomegranates, and eggplants are all ripe in September and will be priced accordingly. Making seasonal recipes from these ingredients is also better for you!

2. Apple Products

From autumn apples to Apple products! In September, Apple typically releases its new product lineup, including a new iPhone, and the prices on their previous generation devices drop. If you can resist the temptation to buy the newest iPhone, you can save a decent amount of money on their older generation devices (if you can wait to make your purchase until mid-September). Apple rarely has sales, so this is the absolute best time to buy if you need a new iPhone.

3. Airfare

Generally, the best time to purchase a flight is about 8 weeks (or around 69 days) before departure, so September is the perfect time to book a flight for the holiday season. The difference between the best and worst-priced days is a whopping $280, which makes it important to take advantage of cheaper airfare in September.

4. Grills

The end of summer, unfortunately, brings an end to the best season – grilling season. If you’re in the market for a new grill, they typically go on sale at the end of summer to make room for new inventory. You can prepare for next summer by purchasing a grill on sale now.

5. Bikes

With summer winding down, retailers are looking to stock their stores with winter sports gear and rid themselves of all their summer gear. Bikes are typically placed on sale this time of year, even though fall is really the best time to take a bike ride!

6. Lawnmowers

Too soon (in my opinion), lawns will be snow and ice-covered. Stores need to get rid of their lawnmower inventory in order to make room for their snowblower inventory. If you’re in need of a new lawnmower, September is the perfect time to make that purchase and save yourself some cash.

7. Summer Apparel

Like sports stores, clothing stores are trying to clear their summer clothes inventory to prepare for the fall. If you’re in need of a wardrobe refresher, there are tons of Labor Day sales where you can purchase a whole new summer wardrobe.

If you focus on simple and layered pieces, you can even turn an end-of-summer sale into a fall wardrobe refresher!

8. Mattresses

While mattresses very rarely go on sale, typically after Labor Day, mattress stores offer discounts on their inventory. It’s recommended to replace your mattress once every 7-10 years, so if you’re hitting that 10-year mark, it might be a good time to shop around for a new one.

9. Broadway Tickets (If You’re Headed to NYC)

September 3rd through the 15th is known as Broadway Week. During this time, select shows (such as Wicked, The Lion King, and Book of Mormon) are 2-for1 or BOGO (buy one ticket, get one free!). Since Broadway shows can be extremely expensive, this is the perfect time to see the show you’ve been dying to see.

If you’re in the market for any of these things, September is the best time to buy so you can get the most bang for your buck!
