Walmart Begins Offering Preferred Hiring To Military Spouses

Walmart has been friendly to veterans and their families for a long time, but this year they’re going another step forward.

The retailer announced earlier this month that it will be giving hiring preferences to military spouses. The initiative, known as the Military Spouse Career Connection, comes as a follow up to the 2013 Veterans Welcome Home pledge to hire 250,000 veterans by 2020.

Veterans and their spouses usually have had a harder time finding work than the average American.

National unemployment consistently hit 50-year lows in 2017 as the unemployment rate was under 5 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

However, unemployment among spouses of veterans and active duty military members was 16 percent.
