Dream Job Alert? A Brooklyn Cemetery is Hiring an Artist-in-Residence
Are you a skilled artist with a mind for history and a somewhat morbid curiosity? If so, your dream job may have just started fielding applications. The Green-Wood Cemetery, a national historic landmark and the biggest cemetery in Brooklyn, is hiring an artist-in-residence for 2021.
Green-Wood Cemetery Artist-In-Residence
Artist-in-residence programs are opportunities for artists to live and work at a certain institution, such as national parks or museums. Cemeteries aren’t typical residency locations, but the Green-Wood Cemetery is a major cultural center in Brooklyn, and the grounds are dotted with beautiful architecture, nature, and art.
The residency will last nine months, from January through September 2021. According to Green-Wood’s website, the ideal candidate is an “emerging or mid-career” artist with experience in visual or performing arts who is living in New York City. The residency includes a $7,500 stipend and a studio in the Fort Hamilton Gatehouse.
The artist’s job will be to “develop a project (or body of work) that is inspired by Green-Wood and engages with the Cemetery’s archives, art, architecture, history, or landscape (or some combination therein),” and they will also put on an art installation showing off their work. Whoever is selected must spend at least two days a week on-site, and collaborate with Green-Wood’s staff.
To be considered, applicants must apply by September 2nd and include a:
- 650-word written description of their work (artist’s statement)
- Statement specific to Green-Wood, and why they’re interested
- Resume
- Portfolio of six completed projects
“I believe Green-Wood will be a great source of inspiration to our new artist-in-residence,” Green-Wood President Richard J. Moylan told Brooklyn Paper. “I look forward to watching the creative process unfold and seeing great art come to life.”
