As a college student, one of the most dreaded parts of my year is filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. If you’re unfamiliar with the FAFSA, it’s basically free money to help you pay for college (awesome!), but you have to fill out a 100 question form (less awesome).
Studying, homework and tests are tough enough, but filling out the FAFSA can be straight-up grueling.
How bad is it? Well last year, upwards of 40% of high school graduates did not complete their FAFSA in most states. According to NerdWallet, that adds up to more than $2 billion in grants on the table.
Luckily thanks to the new FAFSA app, applying just got easier. Students can now fill out the federal aid application right on their smartphones.
FAFSA On Your Phone
The myStudentAid app is bringing the FAFSA into the 21st century. The app gives users all the same data security as completing their application online with some added ease.
The app contains extra guidance on filling out the questions and tries to make the process more “positive, engaging and user-friendly,” according to the App Store description.
Almost every student has a smartphone, and now they can use it to fill out their application anytime, anyplace.
If you still prefer to go through fafsa.gov and complete your form the old fashioned way, the site has been updated for better mobile use. The updates were overdue, and ideally, an easier application system means more students will get financial aid.
The app is free to download on the App Store and Google Play store. Once you download it and start filling out your application, you’ve taken the first step toward getting your piece of that $2.3 billion in grants.
The 2020-21 FAFSA opened on Oct. 1, so get started now and get some money!
